Oh my gosh so my parents are doing the most amazing thing and I just actually can’t believe it.
When I left the family home, about, oh gosh, six years ago now, it wasn’t because I particularly wanted to, but because I knew it was time. At twenty-four, I’d mooched off my parents for long enough and I was ready to be on my own. Have freedom, independence and all that. But at the same time, I loved our house. I mean, it was beautiful, the perfect family home in every way, in a great location and with the best layout imaginable. Fast forward five years and I’ve rented on my own, in a share house, with my partner, and the newest member of our family. Where we were living was great, don’t get me wrong, but we were out growing it so fast and, with another child on the way, have been looking to buy somewhere.
My parents know that, and we’ve actually talked to them a lot about buying somewhere (Kurt and dad are very close), but it came as a total shock when they told us they’d bought a flat a few suburbs over and wanted us to have the house. In fact, they’d done almost everything behind the scenes. When we arrived at their house that day, we were greeted by the best conveyancer Melbourne has to offer. It was a whirlwind experience and mum and dad didn’t give us any room to try and humbly bow out. When they told us they wanted us to use the money we’d been saving on the kids I just burst into tears. The whole thing was so overwhelming. They knew how much I’d always wanted the house and so they were giving it to me outright. I could hardly see the vedors statement I was signing, I was crying so hard. It was the best start to life as a family we could ever have been given.
